Hello Jack,

thank you very much for your message.
I am really surprised to find such a great reply to my request of finding some contact to police officers in the states. My situation and position is the following.
Since  October `75  I  am in the police.  After 2 years of school and training I was patrol-officer for 11 years. And then, in 1988 the state-government decided, that the area (compare it with a district that includes 5 counties) needed a standing riot-police unit, I applied to be transferred. In that unit (we call it Einsatzhundertschaft) I was 8 years. We were responsible in case of events such as demonstrations an crowd-control at soccer-games and such. But then, in the early nineties we found that drugs started to be a matter in the society, in the city here. And since we had the capacity, the manpower to work on that field, I founded a group of officers (within the riot-squad) to work on that field, in cooperation with the drug-department, which only consisted of a few guys. So, drugs was my field during the week, other events was my thing on weekends. For 8 years.
Then my application was accepted to go to some kind of college or university (Fachhochschule). With the degree from school I was promoted to lieutenant in 1999, next promotion was last year. For 2 years then I worked in the department for (of ?) fraud. And then they needed qualified people in the anti-terror department. And there I am now for almost 5 years.
I am married, we have two boys, 12 and 16 years old. My wife Silvia, who works as a psychologist, had the following consideration.
The older boy, Kai, is not so enthusiastic any more to go on vaccation with us, he wants to do his own things. So we decided together to do one last big trip together as a family before we let him off.  And that ist our trip to the US in this Easter-holidays.
So we will arrive in Dallas on April 8th and our plan ist that we don`t have any. We have rented a van and we plan to visit the country and go wherever we feel like.
I did not really expect any assistance from anyone, since it is not my stile to ask.
But I would love to be in touch with someone who could possibly give me (us) some ideas about where to go and what to do in Texas, or what to avoid.
Could you possibly recommend a place to stay for the first night after arrival. (not too expensive)
Is there anything that you would like to get from here, what would you like ??
(We live in the city of Bielefeld -lousy weather by the way-  320 000 people,  countryside, hills, forest and more around here in Westfalia, so the best thing to take would probably be our specialty, a whole chunk of home-smoked ham. But trying to bring that would most likely take me to jail directly - that would be another way to meet law-enforcement officers in Texas.)
My provider told me that my mobile phone is supposed to work in the U.S.. If so, you could reach me under the number  0152 - 02084233.
Our arrival is on flight LH 438, 13.30 PM April 8th.

see you
